Office of Housing & Residential Life - Wayne State University

March 21, 2020

Dear Resident,

The situation regarding the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic is evolving rapidly, and we understand your concern and desire to know what Wayne State University is doing to help you be safe on campus as classes go online this Monday, March 23, 2020. Social distancing and following recommended good hygiene practices are the best ways to minimize the spread of COVID-19. Please continue to check the WSU coronavirus website for the most recent updates and guidance.

Staying on Campus

We continue to recommend that all students return to their permanent residence off-campus if that is possible. However, we know that for many of our residents, campus housing IS home. For those of you who will be remaining on campus, please know that you are welcome. WSU is open, housing and dining are open, and we are here to support you.

If you have already completed the Winter 2020 Housing Intent form online and told us that you are staying, there is nothing more for you to do. Your current housing access will remain until the end of the semester. If you plan to stay and didn't fill out the intent form, please email housing@wayne.edu

Please also note that, as a further mitigation measure to prevent the spread of the coronavirus, effective Monday, March 23, 2020, housing guest registration is suspended, and guests will not be permitted within our campus housing facilities.

Checking Out and Moving Off-Campus with an $850 Credit

We have created a move-out process for March 23 ? April 9, 2020, that should be easy to accomplish while maintaining the social distancing necessary to mitigate the spread of the coronavirus. Failure to abide by these check out requirements may result in the postponement of your move out and/or loss of the credit to your student account.

Room and Board Credits

For those of you who do not need to be on campus and have already left or are considering leaving, we are offering a credit toward your room and/or board charges. We appreciate your patience while we created a solution that balances our on-going fixed costs, the need to continue offering services to those who remain, and the desire to return some value for those leaving campus housing.

All campus residents who follow the procedures outlined below by 5 p.m. on Thursday, April 9, 2020, will receive a credit to your student account of $850. If you are leaving and live in University Tower Apartments, the $850 credit is one per apartment and pro-rated the same way as your apartment rent is pro-rated among the residents.

You will see this credit on your student account after April 15, 2020, unless otherwise indicated:

  • If you owe a balance on your student account, this credit will reduce the amount still due.
  • Any credit balance that remains on your student account for this semester will be returned to you through the Bursar?s normal refund process.
  • If you have already registered for spring/summer classes, this credit will not be applied against those charges when determining any account refund you may be due.
  • The fastest way to get a refund is if you have a direct deposit set up with your student account. Otherwise, a check will be mailed to your address on file. If you?d like to set up a direct deposit to a checking account review the FAQs.
  • If you are a resident who has received specific institutional support for housing and dining charges such as University Scholars, Corvias Scholars, a Corvias Scholarship, or others, or you are an RA, you are not eligible for this credit.

Visit the move-out information page to find the process that applies to you.

Other Important Information

Please remember it is each of our responsibility to practice mitigation strategies to prevent the spread of the coronavirus. We will appreciate your cooperation in

  • bringing a pen to fill out your Express Check-Out envelope;
  • creating physical distance while using elevators, and not creating lines or groups in elevator lobbies or public spaces;
  • bringing dollies and carts from home to limit the sharing of move-out equipment.

WSU has limited carts to deploy as our normal rental supply is not available as a result of the pandemic. If you choose to use a WSU cart, please bring your own Clorox wipes to sanitize the cart before use. (WSU has not been able to procure a large amount of sanitation wipes due to high demand.)

Warrior Dollars Will Roll Forward

If you have a current meal plan with remaining Warrior Dollars, WSU Dining Services will extend the expiration on those unspent Warrior Dollars from April 30 to December 20, 2020. If you will not be returning to WSU for fall 2020, please email housing@wayne.edu to discuss a Warrior Dollar refund.

Thank you and Best Wishes

We believe our residents will pull together to make this move-out process under these unusual circumstances a success. Best wishes to our residents who are graduating, and we look forward to seeing many of the rest of you in the fall, campus housing sign-ups for 2020-21 are currently open at housing.wayne.edu/apply.

If you have any questions about this move out process, please email housing@wayne.edu or access our online chat. We have staff ready to assist you who will return an email or a phone call to you.

Sincerely,

Tim Michael
