🌍 Exciting News from our Sustainability Advisory Council Partners: Wayne County! 🌍 We had the pleasure of attending a press conference where Wayne County Executive Warren C. Evans, alongside Dr. Abdul El-Sayed, Director of Health, Human, and Veterans Services, Darren Riley, CEO of JustAir and the Wayne County Air Quality Task Force announced a significant environmental milestone. 🏭✨ In a major stride towards better environmental monitoring, Wayne County has successfully deployed 100 air quality monitors across the county. This initiative, launched in August 2023 in collaboration with Detroit-based JustAir Solutions, aims to provide real-time, hyper-local air quality data to our communities. Residents can now access this crucial environmental data through the JustAir.app or by visiting waynecounty.com/airquality. The UN-RCE is excited to have Wayne County in our sustainability advisory council.

Thank you SBN Detroit for always highlighting the sustainability work in Detroit. Wayne State University and the UN-RCE are proud to help lead sustainability efforts in the region both through education and actions!
Sustainability touches everything, I think that every higher education institution has a responsibility to be talking about this, debating this, and bringing this into our student projects." – Ian Lambert PhD, dean of graduate studies and research, College for Creative Studies (CCS) The CCS Graduate Program is committed to embracing diversity and fostering an interdisciplinary approach to address sustainability challenges. Initiatives such as the D Tree Studio highlight the significant role cultural artifacts play in narrating stories of sustainability using local resources. In recent discussions with Lambert, Donna Kashian, professor and director of the environmental science program at Wayne State University (WSU), Steve Gilsdorf, senior director of facilities operations and maintenance - soft services at WSU, and Ashley Flintoff, PMP, LEED AP, director of planning and space management at WSU, we explored the integration of sustainability within education. Both WSU and CCS prioritize sustainability in their educational, design solution, and campus endeavors. Education is fundamental to the UN-RCE. Today we had the privilege of reaching out to a local public school to talk about science and environmental health. It was extra special today when Héctor Esparra-Escalera gave our water quality lesson in Spanish to middle school students who spoke little English. Thanks to Wayne State University for setting this up.

Our first student-led event for the UN-RCE. Wayne State University students hosted an educational table with Make Food Not Waste on the role food waste plays in climate change. As part of the Plate to Planet program, we will be hosting monthly events. Our next event is scheduled for March 20th at the WSU student center from 11 am to 1 pm. There are plenty of opportunities for you to get involved, so don't miss out!
