Help select the next generation of WSU School of Medicine physicians

Each year, student applicants to the Wayne State University School of Medicine participate in one-on-one interviews with a physician as part of the admissions interview process. The Admissions Committee invites you to become a member to facilitate new student interviews.  As a physician interviewer, you will help launch the careers of future doctors who will make an indelible contribution to our community and beyond.  New student interviews are held on select Mondays and Fridays beginning in the fall. Click here to volunteer or call 313-577-1466.

For world-renowned chess set collector George Dean ’53, M.D. ’56, however, the game perfectly encapsulates his career in medicine. As a founding father of the Family Medicine specialty, Dr. Dean has spent his career caring for the families he serves while simultaneously moving the powers that be to recognize Family Medicine as a specialty. The Wayne State University School of Medicine has a Family Medicine Department thanks to the leadership and strategic lobbying of Dr. Dean and his colleagues. Read more.


School of Medicine to host reception at AAMC conference in Austin, Texas

The Wayne State University School of Medicine will host a cocktail reception from 6:30 to 9 p.m. on Nov. 3 as part of the Association of American Medical Colleges' 2018 conference in Austin, Texas.  Please join Dean Jack D. The Wayne State University Medical Alumni Association recognizes distinguished alumni and faculty for significant contributions to the School of Medicine and the medical community at large. Awards are presented annually during the Medical Alumni Reunion Dinner. All School of Medicine alumni, faculty, resident alumni and students are invited to nominate candidates for the Recent Alumni Award, the Distinguished Alumni Award and the Lawrence M. Weiner Award. Alumna's journey with WSU School of Medicine inspires endowed scholarship

In the summer of 1965, recently married Barbara and Ralph Cushing loaded their car and traveled across the country to start their education at the Wayne State University School of Medicine. Transferring from medical school in North Dakota, the young physicians-in-training journeyed into unknown territory together to pursue their dreams of becoming doctors. "My husband, Ralph Cushing, M.D. '67, and I met when we entered medical school at the University of North Dakota in the fall of 1963. At that time, the UND School of Medicine was a two-year school, with students transferring to four-year schools to complete their medical school education," Barbara Cushing, M.D. '67, said. "We were married before we entered the WSU class in year three." Read more.

M.Gary Roberson, M.D. '63

M. Gary Robertson, M.D. '63, received the 2018 Lifetime Achievement Award from the communities of Grand Haven, Spring Lake and Ferrysburg for his involvement and leadership in the North Ottawa Community Health System, Ottawa County Medical Society, Michigan State Medical Society and his community for 44 years.


Paul Thomas, M.D. '13

Paul Thomas, M.D. '13, was featured on WXYZ Channel 7 in Detroit for his membership model for health care. Read more.


Richard Stone, M.D. '77

Richard Stone, M.D. '77, has been appointed as executive in charge of the Veteran's Health Administration in Washington DC. In this role he is the senior executive leading the nation's largest health system with more than 160 hospitals, 1,200 ambulatory clinics and more than 323,000 employees. This system is responsible for the health care of more than 9.5 million enrolled veterans.
