There are more reasons than ever to make Wayne State University’s campus home, and students interested in living on campus for the 2018-19 school year can complete an online application beginning Feb. 1 at housing.wayne.edu.
With a variety of expanded housing options and less than a five-minute walk to classes, libraries, a 24-hour computer lab, the Student Center, and the Mort Harris Recreation and Fitness Center, living on campus offers unparalleled convenience and an experience that allows for personal growth, academic success and more engagement with the campus community. WSU’s urban location also offers unique access to all of the cultural and educational opportunities in the ever-growing Midtown area and beyond.
“Students who live on campus enjoy a more holistic educational experience,” said Jeanine Bessette, director of Housing and Residential Life. “Living on campus puts students in a position for academic and personal success. They’re more engaged and are given more opportunity to find themselves and grow.”
Approximately 3,000 students currently enjoy living on WSU’s campus, and a recent market study conducted by Housing and Residential Life indicates that demand for housing options will only continue to increase.
To meet these needs, Housing and Residential Life is excited to introduce the following additions and changes:
The Thompson
The historic Thompson Home, located across Cass Avenue from Old Main, opened in fall 2017 to offer students in the College of Fine, Performing and Communication Arts (CFPCA) a unique living/learning community. The Thompson, open to undergraduate CFPCA students with sophomore, junior or senior standing, includes noise-isolated practice rooms for musicians, a dance studio, open collaboration space equipped with state-of-the-art technology and a media lab. Most rooms in this completely refurbished residence hall are doubles, with three floors offering kitchenette and dining spaces along with a comfortable lounge with bay windows.
Anthony Wayne Drive Apartments
The first phase of the new Anthony Wayne Drive Apartments will open in fall 2018, providing more housing options for upperclassmen. WSU’s newest furnished apartment building will include studio, one-, two- and four-bedroom units featuring full kitchens with modern finishes and dishwashers. The building will also include new retail spaces that will bring additional resources and amenities.
Online self-selection process
Housing and Residential Life will move to an online self-selection process for room assignments and roommates. This process will allow students to self-select their building, room and roommate choices online based on their application date, eliminating the need to wait for a mailed room assignment.
New resident curriculum
WSU’s residential curriculum model is provided as an intentional and specific way of enhancing the college experience and personal development among residents. Students are encouraged to maximize the opportunities provided to them as residents, with an emphasis on engaging in both social and educational experiences with their peers and the campus community beyond the classroom. The curriculum focuses on a diverse set of experiences that support four leaning areas of emphasis: academic engagement and success, social justice and equity, personal responsibility and development, and Warrior pride.
