Wi-Fi upgrade and refresh

C&IT intern Habibul Islam (left) and student assistant Alexander Eklund, survey network signals in the Undergraduate Library.

C&IT is in the final phase of rolling out a new Wi-Fi network across campus! This network is built to provide the best signal within all Wayne State buildings (including WSU housing facilities).

We began in March 2018, by switching to a new vendor, replacing all existing access points across campus, and also adding new ones in areas with low signal strength.

The entire project represents a $4 million investment to deploy more than 4,000 access points across over 100 buildings. Our final step is to add outdoor wireless service in strategically important locations.

Project phases include:

  • Replacement of access points in campus buildings: Completed Oct. 2018
  • Addition of new access points in low-connectivity areas: Completed June 2019
  • Addition of new access points in popular outdoor spaces: Scheduled to be complete by Aug. 2020
