Office of Housing & Residential Life - Wayne State University

Dear Resident,

I am writing to share more information about our plans as we prepare to open campus for the fall semester in the reality of COVID-19.

We know that you’re thinking about and preparing for the fall 2020 semester while monitoring the final ways your courses will be delivered. The university intends to have the course instruction method for all courses published on the registration website by July 15. Knowing for some of you that your decision to live on campus may be impacted by your final course schedule, we previously announced that we have extended the date for cancellation of your housing license agreement (HLA) from June 30 until July 20, 2020.

Please also know that campus housing is open today and will remain open in the fall semester for all students choosing to live on campus. We intend to stay open should other parts of campus need to close as a result of the evolution of responses to COVID-19, and the normal terms of your housing license agreement (HLA) will apply for the entire term of the agreement. We do not anticipate issuing refunds or early HLA cancellations except through the process, and for the reasons outlined, in the HLA.

WSU Housing along with the entire university has adopted best practices as recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and the American College Health Association to mitigate COVID-19. Each of us has a responsibility to adhere to these best practices to increase the safety of our campus community:

  • Requiring face coverings in all common areas of housing buildings including entrances, exits, hallways, common spaces, and laundry facilities.
  • Requiring physical distancing of at least 6 feet in all areas.
  • Increasing high-touch surface cleaning throughout all common spaces.
  • Suspending guest access to housing facilities for the fall semester.
  • Implementing contactless transactions where possible at building desks.
  • Educating residents on their role in mitigating the spread of COVID-19.
  • Extending August move-in from 2 days to a week to allow for proper physical distancing.

You can learn more about the steps we have taken and other updates related to COVID-19 on our coronavirus information page.

If you decide to not live on campus before July 20, 2020, please submit a cancellation request by following the instructions found online. Please note that if you desire to cancel your HLA after July 20, 2020, you may only do so if allowable under the cancellation provisions of the HLA.

Should you have any questions, please email us at housing@wayne.edu or live chat with us from the Housing & Residential Life homepage.

Sincerely,

Kelly L. Thacker, Ph.D.

Director of Housing and Dining Services
