Update from Mid-Central AHEC
5th Annual Health Career Pipeline Program at CMU College of Medicine
The Mid Central AHEC/CMU College of Medicine Health Careers Pipeline Program (HCCP) began on Monday, September 30, 2019. The program empowers high school students to pursue careers in the health professions. Applicant characteristics considered were: a diverse group of students that represent a mix of 9th and 10th grade students, broad representation of schools in the mid-Michigan region, living in a medically underserved (rural or urban) area of mid-Michigan and first generation college students. Students also submitted a statement of interest in relation to the program and health. The schools that have students represented this year are: Alma, Beal City, Beaverton, Breckenridge, Carson City, Gladwin, Meridian Early College (Midland), Montabella, Mt. Pleasant High School and Sacred Heart Academy.
Through exposure to health career options, mentorship, and health and wellness education, students participate in engaging, hands-on, enriching experiences that will foster personal growth and leadership characteristics. The HCPP will be the channel to help students develop their confidence and a support system for their journey into post-secondary education and beyond.
The 9th and 10th grade high school students are paired individually with CMU student mentors from the College of Medicine and The Herbert H. & Grace A. Dow College of Health Professions. They not only learn about possible health professions careers, but also what it takes to prepare for college with time management skills, application processes and follow up.
The Mid Central AHEC staff and CMU Medical students administer this program and sessions are hands-on the entire 9 weeks. The program ends with an uplifting and positive graduation program with family and friends attending, while student projects are presented.
Mid-Central AHEC Welcomes New Staff
Jennifer Morneau, Mid Central AHEC Program Manager
Jennifer Morneau joined the Mid-Central AHEC Regional Center on August 1st. Previously, Jennifer worked for the Office of Undergraduate Admissions at Central Michigan University where she visited high schools throughout the state to assist in other's understanding and navigation of the selection, application and enrollment process. She also supervised a team of students who provided tours to prospective students and guests while managing the visit program structure. Much of Jennifer's past work experiences are centered around recruitment, development and program management, which is already serving her transition to the Program Manager role well.
Courtney Little, Mid Central AHEC Graduate Assistant
Courtney Little started with the Central Michigan University College of Medicine during her undergraduate studies, where she had the opportunity to learn and work with the Mid-Central AHEC team. Courtney is currently working on completing her Master of Science in Administration with a concentration in Health Services Administration (MSA-HSA) and is excited to have this GA opportunity to help guide her learning during the last year of her masters program. One fun fact about Courtney is that she loves to travel and has been to 15 countries so far.
