NLRC Supports Two High School Students at MSU OsteoCHAMPS

The Northern Lower Regional Center (NLRC) is pleased to have sponsored two students from Northern Lower Michigan to attend the MSU OsteoCHAMPS program. OsteoCHAMPS is a 9-day summer camp at MSU's campus that was held from July 6-14, 2019. The mission of OsteoCHAMPS is "to broaden the healthcare interests of disadvantaged youth and to enable these individuals to achieve their career goals."

Information was sent to high school counseling offices in the northern lower region. The NLRC reviewed the applications and selected Samantha Tadian, who completed 11th grade at Alpena High School, and Gracie Blust, who completed 10th grade at St. Mary Cathedral School in Gaylord.

Both students were greatly appreciative of the opportunity to attend the OsteopCHAMPS program. Gracie shared, "While learning in school is very beneficial, this program's philosophy of hands-on learning helped me to expand my knowledge pertaining to the medical field." In addition, Samantha stated, "Through this program I learned the importance of doctor-patients relationships as well as various new parts of the immune system." Both agreed that in addition to the knowledge gained, this experience provided them with some memories that will last a lifetime.

AHEC Hosts Safety Day and Preceptor Appreciation Lunch

The Northern Lower AHEC sponsored the Annual Safety Day luncheon held on July 7th at MidMichigan Community Health Services in Houghton Lake. The Annual Safety Day is part of risk management training for all staff and is important in creating a safe health center for our patients and staff. Staff participated in a series of hands-on activities, videos, and instructional sessions that included fire extinguisher training, spill kit use, active shooter preparation, Glo Germ handwashing station, hazard obstacle room, TB fit test, workplace ergonomics, and proper donning and doffing.

The day also included a Staff Appreciation Lunch. The NLRC hosted this Appreciation Lunch as a "thank you" to all of our staff for precepting, mentoring, and supporting 50 students throughout the year at our MidMichigan Community Health Services locations in Houghton Lake, Roscommon, and Beaverton.

NLRC Sponsors Adult Mental Health First Aid Training

The Northern Lower AHEC received supplemental opioid funding for the previous year which enabled them to train two Adult Mental Health First Aid instructors. As a result, the NLRC Program Manager, Kim Mattlin, and the MidMichigan Community Health Services Community Health Educator, Tammy Frisbie have successfully trained 60 health center staff and 10 law enforcement officers from Roscommon county during the spring and summer.

Adult Mental Health First Aid graduates learn to identify, understand, and respond to signs and symptoms of mental illnesses and substance use disorders. It is an international evidence-based program that is proven to be effective and is listed in the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s (SAMHSA’s) National Registry of Evidence-Based Programs and Practices. In addition, participants will identify multiple types of professional and self-help resources for individuals with a mental illness or a substance use disorder, increase their confidence in and likelihood to help an individual in distress, and show increased mental wellness in one’s self. Finally, a first aider will learn step-by-step instructions on how to respond to an opioid overdose, including how to administer naloxone.

Mental Health First Aid is designed for anyone 18 years and older - employers, police officers, hospital and health center staff, first responders, faith leaders, community members and caring individuals. Over two million people have been trained in Mental Health First Aid nationwide. For more information, please contact Kim at kimberly.mattlin@midmichiganhs.org.
