Wayne State University - School of Medicine

To the School of Medicine Family:

Vice Dean of Medical Education Richard Baker, M.D., provided you a Year 1 curriculum revision update in December. In it he outlined the many ways in which our curriculum will be enriched to ensure Wayne State University School of Medicine graduates the very best health care leaders and advocates in the nation — leaders who exemplify urban clinical excellence and who are dedicated to transforming the promise of equal access to health care into a reality for all.

Dr. Baker pledged to communicate monthly about the progress we have been making toward realizing this enhanced, experiential and exceptional curriculum. Therefore, I am delighted to present to you the proposed Year 1 curriculum schematic, which is the result of countless hours of work by many hard-working and committed Warrior Medicine faculty, staff, students and administrators.

This schematic, along with many pages outlining proposed courses, core competencies, assessment methods and more, was presented in accordance with university policy to Wayne State University Provost Keith Whitfield, Ph.D., for review and approval before the holiday break. We look forward to a response from the Office of the Provost in the coming weeks.

In the meantime, we must remain hard at work, for we know even the most extensive planning is nothing without implementation. Our curriculum revision team must now work toward bringing the plan to life. To do so, the members must thoroughly understand and address future resource needs and challenges, and they are strategically and boldly taking on this work to make this curriculum a reality. For instance, plans are in place to hire two experts to support the development and delivery of the preclerkship program. A clinical curriculum director will work with Year 1 and 2 unit directors to develop clinically integrated content, and a medical writer will assist the faculty in development of quality course material.

Our curriculum revision committee is taking on the lion’s share of work in this endeavor. As such, it is important for the committee, and for all of us, to remember that they do so with our sincere gratitude and steadfast support. I have the utmost confidence in our team and want to convey my extraordinary commitment to this process. This is not an easy task, but it is indeed crucial to the lives and health of our future doctors, patients and community.

Please assist this team in its work should members reach out to you throughout this process, and please continue to read these updates as they become available so that we can all communicate the positive benefits of this revised curriculum to prospective students and community members.
