Northern Lower AHEC Celebrates
3 Year Mark

The staff of the Northern Lower AHEC are excited to be celebrating the NLRC's Third Birthday. The NLRC was three years old in April, 2018. Executive Director, Diane Nielsen, states, "We have accomplished many things, including growing our staff to 2.5 full time employees and forming a 13 member Community Advisory Board."

Happy Birthday, NLRC!

Kirtland Nursing Students Attend Mission Trip Presentation

Nearly 100 students from Kirtland Community College's Associate Degree in Nursing program attended a luncheon at the Kirtland Health Sciences Center in Grayling. Shyla Genslak, RN, BSN, gave a presentation and shared several photos about her experience during a September 2017 medical mission trip to Kenya, Africa.

Shyla earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing, with a second major in Health Science, from Saginaw Valley State University. She graduated Magna Cum Laude in August 2014. She is currently employed as a Pediatric Nurse at Beaumont Royal Oak. Shyla has certifications in Basic Life Support, Pediatric Advanced Life Support, and FEMA. Shyla is active in her community and volunteers as a camp nurse at several children's summer camps. She is a member of Kensington Church in Troy, Michigan, where she also volunteers in the children's nursery on Sundays.

Diane Nielsen, Executive Director of the Northern Lower AHEC, is an acquaintance of Shyla, and learned of her trip. Diane contacted Shyla and worked out the details for her to speak about her experience to the nursing students at Kirtland. "Shyla's presentation highlighted one of many service opportunities that exist for healthcare professionals," stated Kim Mattlin, Northern Lower AHEC Program Manager. Kim continued, "Students were able to hear firsthand some of the challenges of providing healthcare in a developing country, something that we take for granted living in the United States."

Health career handouts were given to high school students that highlighted a variety of careers, ranging from Pharmacist to Veterinarian. They also received information on Hot Jobs and FAFSA.

According to the Michigan HOSA State Leadership Conference materials, there were 3,315 registered participants from 129 participating chapters in Michigan. Michigan's HOSA has 7,014 members in 2017-2018, up from the prior year of 6,268.

Michigan HOSA exists to "enhance the delivery of compassionate, quality healthcare by providing opportunities for knowledge, skill and leadership development of high school, post-secondary and middle school students interested in healthcare.
Northern Lower AHEC Sponsors Students to Attend MSU OsteoCHAMPS Camp

The Northern Lower Regional Center (NLRC) is pleased to be sponsoring two students from Northern Lower Michigan to attend the MSU OsteoCHAMPS program. OsteoCHAMPS is a 9 day summer camp at MSU's campus from July 7-15, 2018. The mission of OsteoCHAMPS is "to broaden the healthcare interests of disadvantaged youth and to enable these individuals to achieve their career goals."

The staff from NLRC attended the partner orientation last year to learn more about the program and tour the MSU campus. Last year, the NLRC received 12 applications from high school students expressing interest. This year, information was sent to high school counseling offices in the northern lower region. The NLRC was pleased to receive six applications this year. The applications were reviewed and selections were made by a committee consisting of two AHEC staff members and a community advisory board member.

Stay tuned for names and photos of our 2018 recipients!

COOR Career Tech Students Visit Area Health Center
20 students, 2 teachers and the principal from the COOR (Crawford, Oscoda, Ogemaw, Roscommon) Medical Occupations Program visited MidMichigan Health Park - Houghton Lake in January 2018. The students received a presentation about federally-qualified health centers (FQHCs) and the jobs offered locally at a community health center. They also toured the health center and visited the Radiology, Physical Therapy, and Laboratory departments. Techs provided an overview of the work they do in each of these areas and students were also able to ask questions. Students also received health career informational flyers about healthcare occupations in the areas they toured.

In addition, students also received monetary assistance from the NLRC in the form of gas cards to help with expenses when they travel to clinical locations. As part of the COOR Medical Occupations program, students will learn necessary skills that care providers must have to work in any department within the medical occupations. These skills include: medical ethics and law, effective communications, medical terminology, medical related math, anatomy and physiology, CPR and First Aid certification, AED (Automatic Electronic Defibrillator) training, infection control, workplace safety, and employability and leadership skills.
