As dean of the Wayne State University School of Medicine, the medical school in Michigan that trains the majority of physicians who will go on to practice in our great state, it is my extreme pleasure to thank you for your loyalty, and an honor to introduce our new Giving Matters newsletter. In this inaugural edition you will find information about the impact made by our generous philanthropic supporters who play a pivotal role in advancing the mission of the School of Medicine to train future generations of physicians, develop researchers who will change the face of medicine around the world, and provide the finest clinical care to hundreds of thousands in southeast Michigan.

The Wayne State University School of Medicine’s mission encapsulates the spirit of community and outreach held by Wayne State alumna and philanthropist Beverly Butler ’93 M.B.A and her late husband, Dr. Adger Butler, Jr., who was a committed health and wellness advocate in Detroit.

Sometimes, you have to just roll up your sleeves and get things done. Jannie Tang, M.D., '76, Res., '77, thinks so, anyway. A successful anesthesiologist, Dr. Tang recounts her history of traveling to the United States and working in a research laboratory to save enough money for her first year of medical school.
