Engage with TRIO this month

Wayne State students, faculty and staff — as well as members of the surrounding community — are invited to engage with WSU's Office of Federal TRIO as part of National TRIO Week in the month of February. The office will host a pair of events:

On the Road/Rally for TRIO - Tuesday, Feb. 25, 2020

The Office of Federal TRIO will host their annual On the Road/Rally for TRIO, a meet-and-greet event in the Student Center Building Ballroom, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 25, 2020. Guests are invited to meet TRIO staff and learn more about the office's programs and initiatives. "Travelers" will receive a "passport" containing questions and information to obtain from each TRIO program — the "states." Travelers’ goal is to visit each state and answer the provided questions to earn a travel award at their final destination. In addition, guests will be able to take part in the TRIO rally, where state and local officials such as Senator Debbie Stabenow, Commissioner Martha Scott and more will  speak about civic engagement and community service, along with student panelists who will speak on their experiences with TRIO. Come, have fun, network and explore the world of TRIO! The event is free, and refreshments will be served. RSVP at https://rsvp.wayne.edu/on-the-road-rally-for-trio

National TRIO Day of Service - Thursday, Feb. 27, 2020

Staff and friends of TRIO will partner with The W Food Pantry for the National TRIO Day of Service on Thursday, Feb. 27, 2020. Volunteers will work at the pantry and at the

Academic/Administrative Building throughout the day. TRIO is seeking nonperishable food donations, which can be dropped off at 5700 Cass Avenue between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. For a list of preferred donation items and to learn more about the event, visit https://rsvp.wayne.edu/national-trio-week-national-day-of-service

TRIO programs at WSU serve over 4,800 people annually in Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties who are low income and the first in their families to traverse the financial, intellectual and cultural changes associated with degree completion.

"Our primary goal is to expose TRIO to staff, faculty and students while simultaneously increasing awareness among those who may be familiar with one program but unaware of the benefits provided through the other five WSU programs," said Henry Robinson, senior director of Federal TRIO programs. "We are also working to honor the rich history and legacy of WSU TRIO programs successfully paving the way to college success for thousands of honorably discharged veterans of the armed forces, mature adults and high school students since 1966."

WSU's Federal TRIO programs reflect the nation's commitment to providing educational opportunities for all Americans, regardless of race, ethnic background or economic circumstance. In support of this commitment, Congress and the State of Michigan established a series of programs to help low-income students enter college, graduate and succeed. TRIO programs and initiatives include The Educational Opportunity Center, McNair Scholars, Talent Search, Upward Bound and Veterans Upward Bound.
