WSU Ilitch Business students win prize as they gain real-world investment experience

A team of students from the Wayne State University Mike Ilitch School of Business this week received the first-ever Kresge Foundation Investment Award as winners of the school’s spring/summer 2019 SMIF Stock Pitch Competition.

The competition culminated student participation in a finance course designed to teach the essentials of portfolio management and stock evaluation and selection. The course (FIN 5220 and FIN 7990) complements a $2 million student-managed investment fund that was established by Kresge’s Investment Office in 2018 and is intended to provide real-world investment experience.

A panel of advisors from the Detroit investment community judged the team on their stock evaluation, selection and pitch presentation.

The winning team (from left): Omar Proty, Golam Tanzim, John Henry Clinkscales III and Samina Alam.
