MidCentral and Northern Lower AHECs Participate in CMU CampMed

CampMed is a three day summer camp for high school students held on the campus of Central Michigan University in Mount Pleasant. The scholarship-based program is designed to provide a hands-on experiences for student who are interested in pursuing careers in medicine or healthcare. Provided at no cost to the student, this year's camp was held June 27 - 29, 2017. The camp is sponsored by Central Michigan University College of Medicine and MidCentral AHEC, with support from the Northern Lower AHEC. Thirty-nine students attended this year's camp. Approximately half of the students were from the Saginaw area. The remaining students were from Bay, Midland, Montcalm, Wexford, and Otsego counties, and also included one student from the Upper Peninsula.

Lisa Hadden, Executive Director of the MidCentral AHEC, and Diane Nielsen, Executive Director of the Northern Lower AHEC, gave a lunchtime presentation entitled "What is an AHEC?" during the last day of the camp. Information on health professional shortage and medically underserved areas in Central and Northern Lower Michigan was also shared with the students.

Upcoming Continuing Education Opportunity: Pain Management & Opioid Addiction Conference

The Upper Peninsula AHEC is hosting a professional development program on pain management and opioid addiction. The event will be held on Friday, October 13, 2017, at Northern Michigan University, and simulcast at all AHEC locations in Michigan. The Northern Lower AHEC will be hosting their simulcast at the Kirtland Health Sciences Center in Grayling.

Topics include: Appropriate Pain Management Using Opioids in Older Adults; Opioid Use & Abuse During Pregnancy & Care of Newborns; Quality Oversight & Management of Opioid Use in Older Adults; Pain Management and Opioids Misuse, Abuse and Addiction: Algorithm for Pain Management; and Local Issues on Opiate Trends Facing the Community. The keynote speaker is Dr. Laurence Skendzel, who is board certified in Family and Palliative Medicine, and is Medical Director at Gunderson Hospice in LaCrosse, Wisconsin.

Continuing Education Credits are available for physicians, nurses, social work, and addiction professionals.

Cost
All day: $65
Two hour nursing pain CE: $30 (10:30 - 1:30)

Newest Member of the MiHIA Team Now Sits on Community Advisory Board
Trisha Charbonneau-Ivey, MiHIA's newly hired Associated Director, has replaced Beth Roszatycki, CEO of MiHIA on the Northern Lower AHEC community advisory board. Trisha comes to MiHIA from Bay Arenac Behavioral Health Authority, where she served as the Interagency Collaboration Coordinator. She is passionate about healthy community  and Great Lakes Bay region. She enjoys working with other passionate people across the MiHIA region as we strive toward a common goal having the healthiest, thriving community.

Charbonneau-Ivey holds a Bachelor of Arts degreen in Sociology from Aquinas College in Grand Rapids and a Master of Science in Health Administration and Leadership from Saginaw Valley State University. She is a member of the American College of Healthcare Executives, Healthcare Financial Management Association, Michigan Lean Consortium, and the Energize Young Professionals Network. She currently serves on Saginaw Valley State University's Master of Science in Health Administration and Leadership Advisory Board, Bay County Emergency Food and Shelter Board, Bay County United Way committees, and City of Bay City Citizens District Council. She was the 2015 recipient of the Bay Human Services Collaborative Council Outstanding Collaboration Award. Her essay, "In Pursuit of Population Health: Improving Outcomes for Vulnerable Populations through Data-Driven Collaborative Approaches to Integrated Care" was chosen to represent Saginaw Valley State University's Master of Health Administration and Leadership Program in the American College of Healthcare Executives 2015 Richard J. Stull Essay Competition. A Bay City native, Charbonneau-Ivey is proud to call the Great Lake Bay region "home", where she resides with her husband, Mark, and their pets.

AHEC Manages Summer Intern Experience

This summer, the Northern Lower AHEC is pleased to host Brett Jobin as an intern. Brett is a junior from Northwood Institute in Midland, MI. He is completing his internship in Health Care Management at MidMichigan Community Health Services in Houghton Lake. Brett is required to complete 400 hours and began his experience at the health center on May 30th. He participated in the center's orientation process and also shadowed a variety of areas, including preventive services, outreach and enrollment, plant services, and the retail pharmacy. He has worked on projects for the AHEC staff, the finance department, employee health, medical records and the quality departments. He also had the opportunity to attend collaborative community meetings, management team meetings, and the recent community opioid conference held in June.
Michigan HOSA State Leadership Conference
The Northern Lower AHEC Executive Director and Program Manager attended the State HOSA (Health Occupations Students of America) Leadership Conference which was held at the Grand Traverse Resort on April 27. The conference is the culminating event after eight Regional Leadership Conferences. Over 2,300 student members from over 100 HOSA chapters state-wide were present to test their knowledge. Competitors who placed 1st, 2nd, or 3rd in their category won the right to represent Michigan at HOSA's 2017 International Leadership Conference in Orlando, Florida, held in June.

The students participate in a variety of competitions in the areas of health, dental, and veterinary. Competition topics can range from Nursing Assisting written test to a Medical Law and Ethics test.

The AHEC staff took information on various health careers which included nursing, surgical technologist, speech pathologist, physical therapist, pharmacist, advanced practice nurse, lab technologist and physical therapist. Several students and advisers stopped by the AHEC booth to gather career information.
