| Dear campus community, Although details remain unclear, the Trump Administration formally announced today that the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program will be phased out. Since its founding, Wayne State University has welcomed all who dream of a better life and supported all who study, work and live on our campus to achieve their potential. We join hundreds of universities, as well as government, business and community leaders across the nation, in expressing our disappointment in this decision and urging Congress to work together and quickly find a solution to this important issue. Late last year, Wayne State joined more than 600 colleges and universities in signing a statement calling for the DACA program to be continued and even expanded. Since today’s announcement may lead to other questions or uncertainties, I think it is helpful to reaffirm our position regarding international and undocumented students — a position that remains unchanged. As I stated in an earlier message, we continue to protect student privacy and do not share private information unless required by law. Similarly, we do not require students to disclose their immigration status. We value the presence of all members of our campus community and are proud of our diverse student body. Our decision to support the continuation of DACA is entirely consistent with our commitment to being a welcoming and inclusive community where people from all backgrounds can learn and grow together. This is a moral imperative, and it helps us all become better people and scholars. As the Pomona statement notes, DACA students “represent what is best about America, and as scholars and leaders they are essential to the future.” We know this from our own history, and we remain steadfast in our support.
