School of Medicine welcomes 290 new student doctors at Class of 2021’s White Coat Ceremony

At the Wayne State University School of Medicine’s annual White Coat Ceremony on July 28, 290 first-year medical students received the white coats marking them as new students. The ceremony was held inside the Max M. Fisher Music Center and Orchestra Hall in Detroit, following two weeks of orientation for the 151 women and 139 men who make up the Class of 2021. School of Medicine’s oldest alum turned 106 July 27

Milton Yarmy, M.D. ’37, celebrated his 106th birthday July 27 and is the oldest living alum of Wayne State University School of Medicine. Why did Dr. Yarmy select what was then called Detroit College of Medicine for his medical education? “It’s pretty simple – I was accepted there,” he laughed. “I had great training there in clinical medicine. That helped me for everything that I would see in my career.” Click here to read more.

The Wayne State University Medical Alumni Association recognizes distinguished alumni and faculty for significant contributions to the School of Medicine and the medical community at large. Awards are presented annually during the Medical Alumni Reunion Dinner. All School of Medicine alumni, faculty, resident alumni and students are invited to nominate candidates for the Recent Alumni Award, the Distinguished Alumni Award and the Lawrence M. Weiner Award. The nomination deadline is Oct. 31. Click here to nominate a candidate.

Fiscal year end approaching quickly – have you made your gift to the Medical Alumni Annual Fund?

The Medical Alumni Annual Fund provides critical financial support to more than 60 student organizations at the School of Medicine, including the World Health Student Organization. This summer, the WHSO visited both Mondayacu, Ecuador and Morne, Haiti. They treated approximately 1,000 patients and were exposed to conditions rarely seen in the United States. This coming year, under the guidance of alumnus Kristiana Kaufmann, M.D. `05, M.P.H., the WHSO will be moving toward a mission of public health-based care in regions where follow-up care is possible. The locations on the map for this coming year are Haiti, Nicaragua and Panama!There is still time to show your support before the fiscal year ends Sept. 30. Make a Gift Today!  


The third annual Detroit OB/GYN ultrasound symposium registration is open!

The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology of the Wayne State University School of Medicine is pleased to announce its third annual symposium, which will be held Oct. 20-21 at the Henry Autograph Collection. Medical volunteers needed for WSU cycling event

On Aug. 19, Wayne State University will host The Baroudeur, an annual cycling event to raise money for student scholarships. The Baroudeur is a fun, noncompetitive event that gives riders of all abilities an opportunity to explore the Motor City and surrounding area on two wheels while helping economically disadvantaged students pursue higher education.
