C.O.O.R. Career Tech Students Visit Area Health Center

Eleven students, two teachers, and the principal from the C.O.O.R. Intermediate School District's Medical Occupations program visited MidMichigan Health Park - Houghton Lake on January 17, 2017. The students participated in a presentation about federally-qualified health centers (FQHCs) and the jobs offered locally at a health center. They toured the Radiology, Ultrasound, Physical Therapy, and Laboratory departments. The healthcare staff provided an overview of the work they do in each of these areas and students were able to ask questions. Students received informational flyers about healthcare occupations in the areas they toured. They were also presented with gas cards to assist them with transportation expenses during their clinical training for their Certified Nurse Assistant class.

Northern Lower AHEC Sponsors Students to Attend MSU OsteoCHAMPS Camp

The Northern Lower Regional Center (NLRC) is sponsoring two students from northern lower Michigan to attend the Michigan State University's OsteoCHAMPS program. The OsteoCHAMPS summer program is a nine day residential experience held on the campus of Michigan State University. Participants live in a dormitory with in-residence staff members, and engage in a well-rounded academic and extra-curricular palette of activities.  The program is a challenging and fulfilling opportunity to experience campus life, take courses in university classrooms, and engage in career-based discussions with health professionals. The NLRC staff attended a partner orientation earlier in the year to learn more about the program and tour the campus. Last year, the NLRC received three applications from high school students expressing interest. This year, information was sent to high school counseling offices in our 21-county area and the NLRC is pleased to have received 12 applications. The applications were reviewed and awardee recommendations were made by a committee consisting of three AHEC staff members and a community advisory board member. Stay tuned for names and photos of our recipients!
